Manuel Gonçalves: "Digitalization is a continuous process"

In a digitalization process that is not new, but that was accelerated by the pandemic, the TMG group has sought to position itself at the forefront and respond to the needs of new business models, with 3D design and a strong connection to sustainability issues. be part of the group's efforts.

In an interview with Jornal Têxtil, Manuel Gonçalves, administrator of the TMG group, believes that, in order to prosper, the textile and clothing industry will have to adapt to this digitalization impulse and collaborate with other sectors, such as software, an area where the Cluster Textile: Technology and Fashion, in which he chairs the High-Level Group, has sought to uncover opportunities.

The pandemic has led to changes in the way the textile and clothing industry works and many believe it has accelerated digitalization. What practical effects did it have on TMG?

A lot has changed. The impossibility of travel in this pandemic period led to an adaptation of the value chain to digital media. The first phase in the exchange of images and some emails, but it quickly evolved to the use of 3D tools that allow the simulation of materials and garments in a digital environment. The benefits of using these tools quickly became visible, so we have been, together with our customers, adapting product development processes and administrative processes to this new reality.

Is it something you consider to be here to stay?

I think what came, stayed. Don't go back. Today we are free to travel, but we continue to meet in Teams because it is more practical and easier. Obviously, we will resume some travel and physical and face-to-face contact with people, but never at the same level as we had in 2019 and beyond. There are many issues that are resolved electronically.
